For Albemarle's focus on sustainability and producing eco-friendly chemical products using green chemistry, we have been recognized with these milestones and awards:

Green chemistry initiatives and awards
Within R&D and technology, we are actively working to incorporate green chemistry principles into new products and manufacturing processes that minimize 1) the amount of raw materials used, 2) energy usage, and 3) the creation of non-commercial by-products

  • TEAL Green Chemistry Awards
    The Albemarle TEAL Awards within R&D focus on the development of eco-friendly products that do not bio-accumulate and require less raw materials and energy than current technologies.

Awards given to Albemarle plants that went above and beyond regulation to improve the environment

  • Community Initiatives Awards
    Winner - Orangeburg, SC – Community service workers with disabilities
    Runner Up – South Haven, MI – Recycling cardboard/plastic/newspaper/household materials

Albemarle’s innovative AlkyClean™ technology received the prestigious “Affordable Green Chemistry” Award from the American Chemical Society. This is a sustainable, value-added technology that significantly improves safety of refinery processes and hazards associated with the transportation and handling of liquid acids.

Albemarle has been awarded numerous certificates of excellence, honor and achievement for safety performance at our various plants and facilities

Wildlife Habitat Council (WHC)

  • Magnolia, AR was awarded the “Corporate Lands for Learning” certification in 2009, which includes a 100-acre tract of land that has been reforested and 70 acres of artificially created marsh
  • VECAP received “Commendation” at the 2008 European Union Responsible Care Awards
  • In Orangeburg, SC, the 100-Acre Woods was recertified with the “Corporate Lands of Learning” Certification in 2009
  • Tyrone, PA achieved certification as a “Wildlife at Work” site for their wooded uplands project in 2008

The Amsterdam facility partnered with the Foundation W.H. Vliegenbos, a non-profit organization dedicated to preserving forested areas in North Amsterdam, The Netherlands.

Principles and initiatives that Albemarle subscribes to or endorses

  • American Chemistry Council (ACC) and Responsible Care® - a voluntary initiative under which companies work together to continuously improve their health, safety and environmental performance, and communicate with stakeholders about their products and processes.
  • ISO 9001, ISO 9002, ISO 14001 - standards that provide requirements or give guidance on good quality and environmental management practice.
  • RC 14001 - technical specifications that addresses environment, health, safety and security.
